Most intro biology courses assume you already know the biology lab report format — it's rarely taught explicitly, just expected. The good news: the structure is nearly identical across almost every intro course, so learning it once covers every lab report you'll write this semester.
The standard sections, in order
- Title — specific and descriptive, not just "Lab 3."
- Introduction — background on the topic, your hypothesis, and why the experiment matters. This is where a lab report introduction sets up everything that follows.
- Materials and Methods — what you used and exactly what you did, written so someone else could repeat it.
- Results — your data, presented as tables/graphs, with no interpretation yet.
- Discussion — what your results mean, whether they supported your hypothesis, and possible sources of error.
- Conclusion — a brief summary of what was found and what it demonstrates.
How to write lab results without adding interpretation
The Results section should be purely observational — numbers, tables, and graphs, with a caption explaining what's shown. Save any explanation of why the results turned out that way for the Discussion section. Mixing interpretation into Results is one of the most common formatting mistakes.
Biology lab report example: Introduction excerpt
"Enzyme activity is known to increase with temperature up to a point, after which the enzyme denatures and activity drops sharply. This experiment tests the effect of temperature on catalase activity, with the hypothesis that reaction rate will increase from 10°C to 40°C, then decline at higher temperatures due to denaturation."
Notice this states background knowledge AND a specific, testable hypothesis — both are expected in a strong introduction.
Common mistakes
Putting interpretation in the Results section. Save all explanation of what the data means for the Discussion — Results should just present what was observed.
A vague or missing hypothesis in the Introduction. A hypothesis needs to be specific and testable, not just "we predicted a difference."
