A week isn't much time, but it's usually enough to meaningfully move your grade — if you spend it the right way. The biggest trap is re-reading notes and textbook examples, which feels productive but doesn't build the actual skill you're tested on: solving new problems cold.
The core principle: active practice beats passive review
Recognizing a worked example when you read it is a much easier task than reproducing the method yourself on a blank page. Exams test the second skill. Every study session this week should center on solving problems without looking at notes first, then checking your work — not re-reading chapters.
A realistic day-by-day plan
- Day 1–2: Diagnose your weak spots. Do a timed practice exam or old test cold, no notes. Grade it honestly. This tells you exactly where to spend the rest of the week — not guessing.
- Day 3–4: Drill your weakest 2–3 topics. Pull 8–10 problems on just those topics and work through them without notes, checking after each one. Repeat any you get wrong the next day.
- Day 5: Do a full timed practice exam under real exam conditions (no notes, timed, no phone). Compare to your Day 1–2 diagnostic to see actual improvement.
- Day 6: Review mistakes from Day 5 specifically — not everything, just what you got wrong — and drill those problem types once more.
- Day 7: Light review only. Skim formula sheets and do 3–4 easy warm-up problems to stay sharp. Avoid cramming new material the night before — sleep matters more than one more practice set at this point.
What to prioritize if you're short on time
Not all topics are worth equal study time. Prioritize topics that: (1) show up in multiple problem types on past exams, (2) you're currently weakest on, and (3) build on earlier material you'll also need (e.g. integration techniques depend on being solid with derivatives). Skip obscure edge cases in favor of the methods you know will appear repeatedly.
Where to get unstuck fast
If you hit a wall on a specific technique mid-week — related rates, u-substitution, L'Hopital's Rule — don't burn hours stuck on one method. A short, focused tutoring session on exactly that sticking point can save you a full day of frustrated self-study.
